Stuff and Happy New Year message

Hello again! I'm sorry it took me so long to post the playlist for the 18th of December, but I got swamped with holiday-related stuff and then *BOOM* it was time to celebrate. I left you in the capable hands of Robert this past weekend, and I'm sure he did a fine job.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to ring in the New Year with you until the 8th, since I've got plans to see The Dresden Dolls in Lawrence on the evening of the 1st. So, there will be a guest host for this Saturday night's show.

I hope everyone's had an excellent holiday season so far, and I wish all of you a happy, prosperous new year! Be sure to listen in on the 8th when I return to bring you more retro-y goodness!

Playlist Dec. 11, 2004 (Interview: Piney Gir)

This weekend was fabulous! On Friday, I was lucky to catch Swayzak and VHS or BETA, all very nice guys. I managed to chit chat with 3/4 of VHS or BETA and David "Brun" Brown of Swayzak, but I'm not sure I'll be able to clean up the sound on the tape enough to air them on the show. I certainly hope so, because I like to share. :) Both bands tore it up at The Bottleneck, and I danced my booty off. VHS or BETA didn't take the stage until midnight, and, being the last act to play that night, much of the crowd had dispersed, which was disappointing. Shame on you folks for missing a kick ass set!

In the spirit of the holidays, I did a lot of giveaways this past weekend, and therefore, I'm a little unsure if I missed writing down a song or two on this list. Hopefully you'll forgive me. ;D It's my hope that my packages will be sent out before the week is out. Congrats to all the R2E2 Rock Trivia winners!

Also, many thanks to Piney Gir for the opportunity to interview her, and to Jason Harper of The Pitch for the blurb in this week's paper.

PS - The Guest DJ that was supposed to have a set on the 18th has cancelled and will reschedule. So you're stuck with me this coming weekend. It's going to be a Winter holiday themed show, so send me your holiday song requests within reason.

Playlist Dec. 4, 2004 (Top 20 of 2004)

In case you couldn't tune in, I did a countdown of my top 20 albums of 2004. Yes, it was cheesy, and it was my first time doing a countdown show format. Thankfully, I think everyone hung in there with me as I didn't hear much backlash for being a little off-kilter with it at all. At first I attempted to do two songs from each album, because these were all albums that had multiple good songs on them. However, we didn't have all night, so I had to get it in check pretty quickly and just do one from each album. Also, I started the show mixing retro in with the countdown. Silly me.

On another angle, I wasn't as caffeinated as I should have been, because apparently I said this countdown was from 2000 a couple of times. It wasn't! This list is comprised of all albums released in 2004, swearsies!

Piney Gir News and Top 20 Albums for 2004

I caught up with Piney Gir this morning, and the resulting interview is slated to air next Saturday, Dec. 11th. Also, look for a little blurb on Piney (w/ a photo) in next week's "Night & Day" section of The Pitch. Fun stuff, I tell you!

The Plot Thickens... (re: VHS or Beta)

Apparently, VHS or Beta are playing in support of Swayzak! It's Swayzak's "Loops From the Bergerie Tour." Also, I have a flier that says they're playing at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS on Friday Dec. 10th. (More Details Here) I hope I'll be able to go.

The line-up is as follows:
Swayzak (Live set)
Matthew Dear (DJ Set)
VHS or BETA
E.V.A.C.

So, I wonder what's going down at the Jackpot Saloon then.

Also, from Swayzak's website, they've been featured in a Motorola "Hello Moto" commercial: View it here from the Motorola site. (Must have Quicktime installed.)

New Music Rec.

Okay, I've been rockin' out all day to some new tune-age (some cool, some not-so), and this is what I have to say, faithful listeners/readers:

You have got to check out the new album by My Robot Friend called "Hot Action."

I think the best tracks on this album are: You're Out of the Computer, I am The Robot, We're The Pet Shop Boys (massive nod, and the PSB apparently cover it), I Know What Women Want, Walking Jewish (though it's a bit lewd for airplay).

There are some tracks from the album to check out on their website (MyRobotFriend.com), but also notable is a killer cover of Blondie's "Rapture." Some of their music is kind of like if They Might Be Giants went electro.

Other recommendations:
FrankBlackFrancis by Frank Black Francis (aka Frank Black)
Yeah, this guitarist/vocalist of The Pixies has released a CD of 1987 Pixies demos he recorded on their then producer's cassette walkman along with a second CD of reworked Pixies tunes.

David Byrne has a new live DVD out, and there are quite a few Talking Heads songs on there.

Nick Cave - Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus
This new double album is pretty cool, though I'm not a big Nick Cave fan.

William Shatner - Common People (from upcoming album "Has Been")
Yes, Captain Kirk has a new album out, and the cover of Pulp's "Common People" featuring backing vox from Joe Jackson is pretty darned cool.

More later, no doubt!

Further Validation That KC Rocks

Get this! For those of you who don't know, Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls (if you don't have a copy of their self-titled CD, you simply must get one) does a bit of blogging/online-journaling herself, and recently had something cool to say about the show they played in Kansas City on October 17th.

In an excerpt from her 10/22 posting, she writes:
the local shows in the south have been pretty well attended and the people we've been meeting have been inspiring and beautiful. performers have just begun to emerge from the woodwork in different places and the brigade is gaining momentum. kansas city was a trip and a half...we flew in for one show to support pj harvey and sonic youth at a large theater. since we'd been getting radio play (a lot of it) we were astounded to actually play to a captive audience of about 2000 folks who were familiar with the album and completely into the show.....we'd expected to feel like an opener (with everybody sort of milling in and curiosly checking us out, at best). it felt incredible, quite a step up for our wee band. pj harvey cancelled (something having to do with a missed flight or a canadian border holdup). i was disappointed not to be able to meet her, but we did get to play a longer set. the folks from sonic youth were plenty friendly and had very kind things to say and share.

...and this is just one of the things that shows how much Kansas City doth rock.

Playlist Oct. 30, 2004 (Halloween Show)

In case you hadn't gathered, I do so love Halloween! The eerie music behind my voice had me talking more than usual for some reason, so I didn't fit in as many songs as usual. Last night (10/31), I dressed up and gave out candy to the few kiddies out trick-or-treating. What a miserable night for trick-or-treating! Update & New Music

I'm nearly caught up! I just finished putting up Playlists for April and May, and I just have January, February and March left to type up at this point!

In other news here's some new music I've been getting down to of late:

Artist - "Album" - (website)
Isidore - "Isidore" (soundisidore.com)
Musical collaboration between Steve Kilbey (deep-voiced lead singer of The Church) and Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero). Lots of beautiful, dark, emotional tracks. Lovin' it.

Piney Gir - "Peakahokahoo" (pineygir.com)
Excellent synthpop music from a London chick keytar player with "Kansas City ties." Love it! Especially the way track 2 "Que Cera Cera" runs into "Girl." The first track, "Boston," starts off with a very Missing Persons type of sound, then the vocals come in like another female vocalist whose name is escaping me just now. Trust me, it's cool as hell.

Not sure if I've put this into one of my Music Rec posts, so here it is:
VHS or Beta - "Night On Fire" (vhsorbeta.com)
Love this album! I agree with what has been said about them drawing on influences from The Cure and Duran Duran, among others.

That's all for now...

Fundraiser Note & Music Recs

Hey everyone,
this and next week will be fundraiser shows. So, please show your support of the station and the show by phoning in a pledge however small. We truly need your support to keep the station's operating costs paid. I'll still be spinning your favorite new and old tune-age, but in between it's fundraiser schtick. You know the drill, right? Right.

Many thanks in advance!
...
And... here's a list of music I'm currently digging (you'll see some of these in recent playlists as well, it's just that I hadn't posted the info on them as yet).

Artist - Album
Halovox - "Halovox" (halovox.com)
Synth-driven music by a guy named Frank from Mineola, NY. Love it! He's very obviously influenced by Depeche Mode and other New Wave synth artists and even does a cover of DM's "Fly On The Windscreen." Fun fact, he used to be in a band called Brand New Idol that has a track on the locally produced "2002 Bangs... Sounds of the 80s" compilation (available at CDbaby.com along with Halovox's album).

Robyn Hitchcock - "Spooked" (robynhitchcock.com)
Since the mid 90s or so, Robyn's been making more folk-oriented music. I really dig this new album he's got out, but you will probably not hear it on my show. I do love this guy, though, especially the work he did with The Egyptians.

Duran Duran - "Astronaut" (duranduran.com)
Astronaut just hit stores this past Tuesday (after three years of recording/producing it). This is the band's first album since 1985 recorded by all original five members. I'm not keen on the single, "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," but there are other songs on it that I dig, and will be featuring on the show as soon as I get my copy of the album. (Flippin' US Mail!) (Update 10/23/04: For you chart-watchers, it entered the Billboard Internet Sales charts at #1, and entered the Top 100 chart at #17. In the UK top 40 album charts it entered at #3. The single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise" entered at #5 and is now #15 on the UK top 40 charts.)

The Faint - "Wet From Birth" (thefaint.com)

The Countdown - "Scratch & Sniff" (thecountdown.net)

Sons & Daughters - "Love The Cup" (sonsanddaughtersloveyou.com)
Is it me or is there a sudden influx of excellent music coming from Scotland these days?

More to come.

Acting indifferent at the merch booth putting on make-up,

Playlist October 9, 2004

I'm sorry that this post is so delayed, and I'm sorry I didn't get that other promised music post made. Perhaps you'll forgive me, since I've recently put myself back into college full-time. However, I still plan on a music posting with links to rad artists' websites and schtuff. Sho, shtay tuned, may-teesh. (Sorry, I was channeling Sean Connery for a moment, but I think I've got him out of my system now. Thanksch.)

Oh, and FYI, as it turns out (don't hurt me, you know-it-alls) "Gibby Hanes" (of Butthole Surfers fame) is the lead singer's name, and the album title is "& His Problem." My internet access has been wonky of late and almost completely unreliable, so I didn't get to check that stuff out before I went on air. Such is life, I suppose.

New Music, plus An Update

I've been adding some backlogue playlists here and there, and have added some music recommendation pages as well. There are a couple in July and there's one in June. So, happy hunting!

Here's what I've been spinning with glee this week:

Artist - "CD Title" (website)
Regina Spektor - "Sampler of songs from forthcoming album Soviet Kitsch" (reginaspektor.com)
If you love The Dresden Dolls and Björk, you'll love this. Not to mention that The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer lists Regina as one of her favorite new artists.

Donovan - "Beat Cafe" (donovan.ie/beatcafe)
Donovan of "Mello Yellow", "Hurty Gurty Man" and "Sunshine Superman" fame has a new album out and it is really freakin' cool! There's some streaming audio of it when you open up the website.

Clinic - "Winchester Cathedral" (Artist Page on Domino Recordings)

Last week:
Swayzak - "Loops from the Bergerie" (swayzak.com)

Black Tape for A Blue Girl - "Halo Star" (blacktapeforabluegirl.com)

Menomena - "I Am The Fun Blame Monster" (menomena.com) A really bizarre site, but info is there, if you can handle the visual overload.

Björk - "Medùlla" (bjork.com)

August 14, 2004 - I'm Out

The fantastic Curt (aka "The Rocker") will cover the show this weekend (August 14th). I will be off frolicking with family in some obscure tree and mountain-laden location with lakes and stuff.

I'm sure he'll treat you right. ;)

I'm slowly updating this blog with playlists from 2004, and I suppose I'm working backwards. I promise it'll get there. At least I've finished posting all playlists up through 2003 in the archive. Feel free to check those out at your leisure.

New Music Recommendations

This week's "new stuff to check out" list:

Tommy Stinson - "Village Gorilla Head" (tommystinson.com - check the music page for downloads) (Best known as the bassist for The Replacements, and has also worked with Guns 'N' Roses)

The Vibration - "Ear To The Ground" (the-vibration.com)
Cool sounding girl-punk. Think Sonic Youth, The Cure, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

They Might Be Giants - "The Spine" (theymightbegiants.com)

The Orphans - "5:30AM on a Rainy Day" (theorphans.us)
Okay, I recommended the EP last week (didn't I?), but I finally scored the full-length! Crystal clear male vocals w/ rockin' guitar, drum and bass. They kind of remind me of Midnight Oil, especially on the song titled "Time's Up."

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my new blog! I've had a weekly radio show since July of 2002, and I thought this would be a good place to post my radio show playlists past and present. I'm very new to blogging, so please be gentle, hmm? I think I'll start by creating a blog for archived playlists, and build from there to the present shows. I have been sharing these playlists with friends over the past couple of years, so I thought, why not make it available to a wider audience, or at least to my listening audience, in an easily accessible location.

This show marks the first time since the schedule change that I'm covering an extra howr. Radio Nation has been moved to another time-slot, and that leaves the hour prior to my 11pm slot open for me. However, there's no telling how long I'll be covering this hour. I will try to keep everyone posted as soon as I know. Until then, it's party time! As you know, when I was on Thursday nights, I had three hours, so I'm looking forward to having the elbow room.
