Playlist Dec. 24, 2005 (Holiday Show)

I had actually found three versions of Winter Wonderland, and although I wanted to play them all, I managed to contain myself by only playing two. Once I played the Hellogoodbye version, I yearned to hear the classic Annie Lennox version, because I like it so much more. The one I didn't play was The Cocteau Twins' rendition. Maybe next year!

Playlist Oct. 29, 2005 (Halloween)

I was certain I would get more requests than I did, but I should have known people would most likely be out and about the weekend of Halloween. Someone even sent me suggestions via email while I was on-air. It's too bad I can't check email once I'm in the studio. Overall, I wanted things to run smoother than they did, but it was not meant to be. I had fun anyway and I hope everyone enjoyed it. :D

Start thinking about New Wave/Alternative Winter holiday song requests, because that's my next project.

New Music Recommendations

Okay, I realize I haven't done this in a really long time, but I've been a tad busy. It happens sometimes. ;)

Hello Goodbye - Heart Attack (RacingJunior Records)
A band comprised of Swedes and Norwegians, Hello Goodbye gives me hope for new music yet. They kind of remind me of a new indie-rock Bow Wow Wow. I realize people don't always like to draw comparisons, but sometimes you have to in order to sort of figure out why you like something so much.

Longwave - There's A Fire (LongwaveTheBand.com)
Mellow at times, but rockin' at others. I can hear a definite influence of New Wave music coupled with a bit of acoustic guitar and vocals reminiscent of Michael Penn meets Radiohead. Good stuff! Favorite tracks: There's A Fire, River (Depot Song)

Hurdy Gurdy - Prototyp (NoSide.com)
Bizarre instrumentals developed with the use of an old string instrument called a Hurdy Gurdy. Hurdy Gurdies were fabled in Germany to be used by dirty old men to lure children out so they could kidnap them or somesuch nonsense, it also was connected to folklore that suggested it was used to convince parents to sell their daughters into prostitution/slavery. There is some haunting sounding stuff that I hope to find a way to incorporate into the show somehow, if only a couple of times. This duo consists of two swedish Hurdy Gurdy masters: Brisland-Ferner of a band called Garmarna and Totte Mattsson of Hedningarna (two swedish bands, I presume, since I've heard of neither). All this time I wondered what Donvan was singing about in "Hurdy Gurdy Man."

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary (SubPop Records)
Canadian band Wolf Parade have given me hope with this latest release. I hear piano, acoustic guitar and vocals that bring have a sort of Hot Hot Heat and Gary Numan soul. I definitely hear some Bowie influence as well. Nice. I like the following: Grounds For Divorce, Dear Sons & Daughters of Hungry Ghosts

Music NOT recommended:
I hate to bash people's bands and stuff, but sometimes you get something that you just expected so much more out of. I'm sorry, but I was disappointed in the following CDs that I received recently.

The Birthday Massacre --- bad 80s influenced band. They've taken an 80s sound and tried to make it into pop-punk, but not in a good way. What's worse is their image tries so hard to be a dark, ragdoll version of new wave. I think that's what they thought their sound would be like. They failed. If someone tries to recommend them to you, please reconsider checking them out.

Ghost In The Machine --- Likewise, except more like taking bad arena rock and marrying it to wannabe Trent Reznor stylings.

If you're going to create a band that's influenced by an era that I many people hold so dear, at least please have some respect. Sheesh.

More later...

Playlist August 6, 2005 (Interview Nick Rhodes)

Tonight I broadcast an interview I recorded with Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran on Thursday afternoon, July 21, 2005, just before they played the Midland Theatre here in KC (July 23rd). As I've said in a previous post, it will be re-broadcast Wed. night/Thursday morning (Aug. 11th) on Chux Mix, which airs from 1am to 5am.

I have to admit that leading up to the interview with the classic Duran Duran song "Careless Memories" finally made me realize how real the interview had been, and what it meant to me to get the opportunity to do it. It's indescribable, that feeling. :)
I hope it made for interesting listening, and I hope you got some laughs from it as well. I know I did. :D Unfortunately, (sort of), I got lots of calls afterwards, and had a hard time keeping the show sounding smooth (at least from my standpoint). I also may have missed writing down some of the songs I played, but I'm typing up what I have on paper. Also, I broke some of my rules this weekend... but I'm sure you can relate. We all have off nights.

R2E2's 3rd Birthday

July 19, 2002 was the first night that Retro Red-Eye Express aired on KKFI. So, tune in this weekend (July 16th) when I celebrate the show's 3rd Birthday! Can you believe it's been three years? Where did the time go?

If anyone wants to do something special, please email me (retroredeye@gmail.com) in advance. I really don't like surprises late on a Saturday night. Believe me, it's been done. Unless you ask me in advance, please don't just turn up during the show.

FYI, I won't be doing the show on Saturday, July 23rd due to a special concert I'm attending (you know the one). Curt, host of "The Rocker" on Tuesday nights, will guest host to bring you his version of Retro Red-Eye Express.

Today was a monumental day as it was Live8 day... when several countries held free concerts to raise awareness about the G8 convention and to show how many people supported Bob Geldof (of The Boomtown Rats) and Bono (of U2)'s message. It's been 20 years since Live Aid's efforts in 1985, and not much has changed since then. This was such a massive movement and many of the bands who played Live Aid also signed on to be part of Live8 as well. Find out more at the following websites: www.live8live.com and www.one.org.

Playlist June 4, 2005 (Birthday Show)

In case you were wondering, my birthday (June 5) was fabulous! There was chocolate, nicely spiced food and a romantic walk in the park. All the trappings of a perfect day (cheesy Velvet Underground ref. not intended). Many thanks to the listeners who phoned in birthday wishes! In a way, I sort of felt like an attention whore, but I always figure that if I wait until the very last minute to tell people (especially acquaintances), they don't feel obligated to give me things or make grand gestures, etc. Is that bad of me? Probably.

Yes, I was hoarse again last night. I've just returned from seeing my favorite band for the second time this year. Except this time I spent 48 hours in NYC seeing them at Madison Square Garden! Then time was spent hangin' with my fellow fans a bit, then a visit with family. Nuts, I tell you! Nuts! Fun, though, and highly recommended, I think. When you've got 15th row available for you at Madison Square Garden, you go. That's all I'm sayin'!

I Have a Habit I Just Can't Quit...

Okay, I've waffled back and forth about mentioning this, but I've finally decided it's time to reveal something. I've developed a new addiction. Have any of you been to MySpace.com? MySpace.com is a cool networking tool. If you're on dial-up, it can be a bit of a nightmare, because too many of the doofs on high-speed seem to think it's cool to put video clips in their profiles that insist on starting up every time you open their profile. Unfortunately they are stupid enough not to edit the code to stop such a heinous infraction. Otherwise, it's a fun website.

I am a little wary of putting my profile here, but you CAN find it, if you look in the right place. I don't want to just post it in a blog post.

I found out about MySpace a few months ago after receiving an update email from a band's mailing list. Their message mentioned to check out their MySpace page. So, I did and, on a whim, decided to create a profile for the good of the radio show, and that was the beginning of the end! As if I have nothing better to do with my time than to obsess over my MySpace profile. :/

It's crazy stuff!

Playlist Feb. 12, 2005 (Un-Valentine's Day)

Okay, for this week's show I mixed up the sappy with the melancholy as per my usual M.O. If I played songs that have recently been played, I apologize, because I accidentally left some prior playlists at home. :/

OH, and I recently discovered that Piney Gir's Peakahokahoo is slated for release in the US on March 1st! You can pre-order it at your choice of internet music stores. (Do a search.) In other news, I've heard that They Might Be Giants are releasing a new kids' album called "ABCs" or something like that. They're also doing some video to go with it. Duran Duran's North American tour has just begun, and I have my ticket for the closest show I could get to. U2 have cancelled their tour due to some unsavory goings on with their presales to members of their fan community, and Larry Mullen, Jr. can't seem to apologize enough. He posted an open letter on their website, and if you caught the Grammys, he even took the opportunity to apologize there.

Anyway, here's what the list looked like:

Out & About - DJing Around Town

This just in!
I'll be DJing this and every Tuesday night at Slammerz in Westport from 9:30pm to 1:30am.   Slammerz is located on Main St. near Westport Rd, across the street from Osco/Skaggs.

Cut me some slack, though, I'm new to the club DJ thing.
