Playlist Dec. 10, 2006 (Best of 2006)

Of course once I got home, I thought of another band whose album came out this year that I've been listening to from end to end for about a month now, and that's Favourite Sons' album "Down Beside Your Beauty." The vocals to me sound like what the lovechild of Robert Smith and Lou Reed would sound like. Definitely worth checking out. You can hear some of it on their myspace page here. The following is the playlist for tonight. You'll notice that a large portion of it is my "best of 2006" list. I will put an asterisk (*) next to albums that I have heard in their entirety and like as a whole. This doesn't mean that the others without asterisks suck, it just means I haven't had time to listen to the whole album/ep. Please also note that this list is not ranked at all, and that 27 albums and eps are represented.

Playlist Nov. 25, 2006 (back to 3 hrs)

The following playlist reflects last week's return to a three hour time-slot. I am really excited that my show's regained its third hour and I have Michael T. to thank for that (he does The Justice Files on Monday nights from 11pm - 1am, and has been temporarily hosting Best of KKFI right after R2E2 until a new "Best of" host is found). Even more exciting was the show of support and interest in the form of calls and requests (as you can see below, there were quite a few). Thank you so much for that. It really made the tech. diffs I was handling more bearable.

I'm sorry about having gotten a little behind in posting playlists this these past two weeks, but work has made it unavoidable. Here's last week's list, and I'm working on getting the prior two (or is it three) lists typed up soon after.

This weekend - Back to 3hrs!

Starting this weekend, the Retro Red-Eye show goes back to being three hours! Unfortunately, the third hour is added at the end, but three hours is three hours, right? So, now the show extends through to 2am! That's three whole hours of taking you back with my favorite music from the 70s, 80s and 90s and bringing you up to date with today's music that has evolved from that good stuff.

Hope you'll remember to tune in!

~S.

Playlist Oct. 21, 2006 (Roman Numerals in-studio) (2nd Week Pledge Drive)

Many thanks to anyone who pledged their support on 90.1 FM this pledge drive. I don't know what the final number is, but it's over 90,000 for the whole week, including the silent donation drive (via US Post), and online as well as on-air pledges.

It was such a pleasure having Billy Smith of Roman Numerals on the show tonight. Hopefully, our conversation was somewhat entertaining to listen to. It's so hard to consider how it sounds from the other side of the radio when you're in the middle of it. I'm sure the following is not a complete list. I'm going to fix it as soon as I get the back-up recording.

Hello, faithful and new listeners alike! As of yesterday, 90.1FM KKFI began our Fall On-air Pledge Drive! What does that mean exactly? This is that crucial time when we appeal to our listeners for pledges in order to help increase our membership and raise money to cover our operating costs. The Fall 2006 On-Air Fund Drive runs through Saturday 10/21, so please call 816-931-3122 and pledge your support on your favorite programs!

ROMAN NUMERALS
Next week (10/21), I'll be having local band Roman Numerals drop in! They're coming in to help pledge pitch, and they'll be doing their version of Retro Red-eye Express for you, so there's no telling what gems they'll bring in from their collection!

Listen to Retro Red-Eye Express and your other favorite KKFI programs online by going to kkfi.org (click on "Streaming") OR, if you're in the Greater Kansas City area, by tuning your radio to 90.1 FM KKFI.

The Gary Numan Show @ Record Bar 8/15/06

Somehow I completely forgot to mention the Gary Numan show during tonight's show! I had a great time at the show. The opening band were called New Skin, and they were a really good british goth-rock type of band. I wish I'd picked up their EP at the merch booth.

He sang a few old songs (Down In The Park, Are "Friends" Electric?, and Cars) mixed in with songs from Jagged and the albums immediately prior to it (admittedly, I am not good at recognizing all his songs). I know they did Slave and Prayer for the Dying, but I'm fuzzy on the other songs. Tim Finn in The KC Star did a little write-up on it, though and he had a set-list included. I'm not sure if it's accurate, though.

Gary was sounding and looking great and was very energetic. He seemed to really enjoy the audience's response to just about everything he played (being that the whole crowd seemed to love it all). I loved seeing a few grins on the man's face. He got right up to the edge of the stage while singing, and was head-banging and dancing to the beat. Loved it!

Here are some photos my friend took at the show:

OH... and the follow-up to the Numan Interview saga! I managed to schedule another brief phone call to record station IDs, and I got to find out what happened on his end and tell him what happened on mine. He laughed at the irony of the situation (as did I), being that I was talking about "We Have A Technical" and "Me! I Disconnect From You" right before we got disconnected. He said he thought he'd bored me to death and that I'd hung up on him. I thought he hung up on me, being that the last thing he was talking about was how the lyrics on Jagged are too personal and embarrassing to go into. We were both wrong. He must have been traveling while talking to me, and must have gone out of range of his phone's network. I was grateful that at least we got as much conversation as we did before it dropped out. Never fear, though! I'll get a chance to interview him again in the future. I've discovered that this current tour of the US is a precursor to a more extensive tour in April of '07!

Playlist Aug 12, 2006 (Gary Numan Interview)

It was such a privilege to get to talk to Gary Numan this week, I just wish it hadn't been cut off so abruptly. I had a couple more questions and things I wanted to talk about, but all in all, it worked out okay, I think.

I'm looking forward to the live show on Tuesday, aren't you? I admittedly got a little carried away in doing my post interview tribute, but I guess it happens.

Playlist July 29, 2006

Greetings fair listeners,
I had planned to have the first part of (if not the whole) tonight's show reflect the dark mood I was in. Although the first hour did indeed start off on a melancholy note, my mood cleared after a little sonic therapy. Did you feel the dark cloud of melancholy lift?

Seriously, though, music plays such an important part in my life. To imagine a world without it is to envision my version of the fiery pits of the underworld. I truly believe it is that important. I would go so far as to say it's my religion, except I'm a listener and collector, not a gear-head or someone who gets into every single minutia about producers and mixers and synth programmers of every band/artist I get into.

I know people who freely admit that they don't care that much for music. Don't. Care. For. Music. This concept is alien to me. My own grandmother is one of said people. She tried to listen to my show once, and said she enjoyed it, but "who picks the music? It's horrible." Which I can understand, being that she's approaching 90 years of age. I am sure Punk Rock is a torturous sound for her, to say nothing of Electro-Clash.

Here's tonight's list:

Grey Radio Last Night

I would like to thank Grey Radio's co-host Danielle for having me guest co-host on her show last night. If you got to listen, you were treated to 1.5 hours of a set by Danielle's design, and one and 1.5 hours of my version of Grey Radio. We chit chatted about Depeche Mode and the two versions of "Safety Dance" (SSSS-AAAA-FFFF-EEEE-TTTT-YYYY... and so on) among other things and spun our favorite tunes for both Lawrence and KC audiences. The phone rang off the hook as well, which was cool.

Also, many thanks to you, KC and Lawrence listeners, for tuning in and showing support (via the aforementioned phone calls). Grey Radio will be back next semester, and I've invited Danielle to guest co-host on Retro Red-eye sometime. She's a lovely gal, and really knows her music.

The playlist is on KJHK's website: http://www.kjhk.org . My set started with Depeche Mode.

Special Guest "Appearance" on KJHK! (TIME CORRECTION)

There is this cool show on KU Lawrence, KS' college station 90.7 KJHK whose aesthetic sensibilities are not entirely different from those of Retro Red-Eye Express. "What is the name of this obviously fabulous show" you ask. Says I, "It's Grey Radio, and it's produced by co-hosts Danielle and Joe on Friday nights from 9pm - Midnight."

Why am I telling you all this? Well, my faithful, occasional and potential listeners, I have been asked by the lovely Danielle to guest co-host on "Grey Radio" next Friday, July 28th as Joe won't be able to do the show that evening! Yes! Get ready, people, because you are going to officially get far too much of me for one weekend!

For those of you near and far who don't receive the KJHK broadcst, never fear, they too are in the online streaming game! Just go to KJHK.org and on the left-hand side of the page, there's a "KJHK LIVE" icon that gives you the option to choose whether you want a Hi-fi or Lo-fi stream. You might even get to hear it if you're on dial-up! Awesome, no?!

I hope you'll get to tune in!

Playlist July 15, 2006 (show's 4th anniversary)

Having only just lost Syd Barrett this week, I can't believe I failed to mention during the show how much Syd Barrett's music means to me. If you have the chance to check out some of his early work with Pink Floyd, by all means do! It's addictive stuff. Start with "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and go from there. Some of my favorite songs of his are "Arnold Lane," "Lucifer Sam," "Gnome," "See Emily Play," and "Chapter 24." The melodies are so beautiful and the lyrics are of the psychedelic, fantatstic sort that could only have come from a madman or a genius, if you know what I mean.

Many thanks to all who played along with my crazy trivia idea!

Delay in posting Richard Butler [& my] Birthday Show Playlist

Arrrgh! I spent about an hour typing this up whilst multi-tasking on something else, and was just putting the finishing touches on my beautiful masterpiece of a posting... and I made the fatal mistake of previewing it and backing up to edit it. This was a really long post that contained more than just the playlist! I had tour dates and other events typed up, a little blurb about Richard Butler and what he means to me... and it disappeared in a flash, people! I'm fairly distraught. it's now 2:36am. I'm off to bed, so I'll have to finish this another evening.

Many apologies.

Playlist May 13, 2006 (post DM show)

The Depeche Mode show ended early due to (according to Depeche Mode's management) Dave having a bout of laryngitis. Supposedly he lost his voice after the six songs he performed. There were reports that he couldn't hear himself through his in-ear monitors during any of the songs he did, because he was supposedly seen telling the sound guy with hand gestures to turn him up. He kept it together up through the first six songs, getting the audience to sing a lot of the choruses, and when it came time for Martin Gore to sing "Home" and "It Doesn't Matter Two" (a regular break in the schedule). The music for "In Your Room" started which was supposed to bring Dave back on-stage, but when Dave failed to appear, the song was stopped and a sort of on-stage huddle happened. We learned that Dave was too ill to continue the show, and were asked by Andy Fletcher if we'd mind hearing a few more songs from Martin. The crowd cheered and chanted Martin's name. I shouted "Compulson" (geek that I am), which is a single from Martin's first solo effort. Martin announced they'd do one that was easy for them to do under the circumstances, and sang "Leave In Silence" (which hasn't been performed in the US in 20 years apparently). He proceeded on with "Somebody" (a signature song), "A Question of Lust" and "Damaged People" (off the new album). All the last four songs were not on the setlist for that night, and I'm not sure Damaged People was even one they were doing on this tour. I felt it was really brave of Martin and showed such showmanship to keep the show going for as long as he could without much rehearsal. He sounded so amazing as he sweated bullets up there. The worst bit was when Fletcher came back out to announce that the show was over. The look on the man's face as he did the tough part of saying something to a crowd of people that you just never want to have to say was heart breaking. He was visibly broken as his shoulders slumped over and his head went down as he exited the stage amidst a few boos from idiots who didn't know any better, and cheers and chants for more Martin from fans. I swear some people really must have been raised by wolves (re: those who booed).

I just hope that Depeche Mode don't wait another 12 years to come back to our fair city.

Playlist May 6, 2006 (Depeche Mode Special)

I cannot tell you how much I adore this band! I have never done as extensive a tribute to my other favorite band, Duran Duran. Perhaps someday, huh? I think you may all be burnt out on Depeche after this, so I will probably give it a rest for a few weeks. I did something I don't often do in announcing all the album titles that the Depeche Mode songs were from, so I'm typing them up on the playlist as well. Unfortunately, in doing all that talking, I didn't fit nearly as much music in as I would have liked.

This Tuesday Night @ Record Bar!

Also, this week's issue of The Pitch has a little blurb in the Night & Day section for Tuesday night! I gave 'em a photo too.

Here's the text:
Rocking On, Sunshine
By Rebecca Braverman

Music critics may use older bands Joy Division, Gang of Four, Echo & the Bunnymen to describe newer ones (particularly those that rip off the music of the early 80s), but what good does it do for listeners who have never heard the originals? Forever Young had a life before Youth Group and The O.C. but does anyone remember Alphaville?

Sunshine does. The host of Retro Red-Eye Express on KKFI 90.1 spins a mix of bands such as Devo and Bauhaus on Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. while blending in new tunes from up-and-comers like the Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientists. Tonight she moves the music to the Record Bar (1020 Westport Road, 816-753-5207), where shell take the decks around 10 p.m. Old-school new-wave types: Sunshine encourages you to bust out your vintage gear. Tue., April 18, 10 p.m. Record Bar, 1020 Westport Rd. , Kansas City

Thank You & Some Music News

First of all, many thanks to all who contributed during Retro Red-Eye Express last week and all throughout the week during our other programs. R2E2 managed to raise a respectable $220 last week. Your contributions help KKFI's independent voice continue to be heard! Let's try to up the ante tonight, shall we? I'm not entirely sure that my playlist for last week is complete, but I was kind of preoccupied, so I hope you will forgive me. Whatever I have will be posted a little bit later.

In Music News (Some of which is stolen borrowed from RememberTheEighties.com.):
Two members of Editors did an acoustic session during the "Rolling Stone Original" show during SXSW festival in Austin, TX recently. Here's a link to the over 15 minute peformance. It's in a format that only RealPlayer will read, so you will need to open RealPlayer and copy/paste the link address into the "Open Location" blank. It's definitely worth a listen. I think it's quite lovely.

Thomas Dolby is performing 20 dates in the US starting next week and going through May. Apparently he has a new album in the works as well and is warming himself up for something bigger. What has he been doing all this time? Apparently he founded a company called Beatnik that specializes in cell-phone ringtone software.

Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love frontman Richard Butler's first solo album is due out on April 18th (in the US), and he plays the last night of his US promotion tour tonight in Solana Beach, CA. (I can't tell you how much I wished he'd have visited us here in KC, but perhaps there's hope he'll add us to the upcoming Psych Furs tour rumored to take place this Summer.)

For those who haven't heard yet (I'm sure there's someone who hasn't yet), Bauhaus are playing US tour dates in support of Nine Inch Nails.

Duran Duran has been working on a new album and the latest I've heard is that they hope the first single will see a pre-Summer 2006 release. (One can only hope. Those guys are notorious perfectionists.)

I'm all kinds of excited for the May 10 Depeche Mode/She Wants Revenge show at Starlight in KC, MO! You're all going too, right?

Erasure are set to do an acoustic tour of the US and Europe, and have a new album due out on April 18th called Union St. It's comprised of reworkings of tracks from their back-catalogue, and they've released a new single called "Boy."

When In Rome, best known for their hit single "The Promise" (revisited recently on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack) have scheduled some US tour dates. Most notably is a gig on May 5th in Chicago, IL. Further info is forthcoming and should be available on their official myspace page.

APB News! "Something To Believe In" for Sure!

Last week I was ranting and raving again about how my APB "Something To Believe In" CD (which was "printed" in 1985) has been worse for wear these past couple of years. It had scuffs on it that, at first, started to make the sound of the first four tracks fuzzy, then eliminated them altogether. I had it buffed at a music store, but all it did was bring back the first two tracks (Shoot You Down and Talk To Me) in their fuzzy state.

As it is one of my most prized possessions, I have been all torn up about it, and those who were listening when I first bemoaned its demise a year ago heard me talk about how in looking to replace it, I found it was going for upwards of $100! Who buys a CD for $100?! Needless to say, I was gutted! If you look for it now, you'll find that a "slightly scuffed" copy goes for nearly $100, and a "new" one goes for nearly $250! Outrageous!

So, imagine my delight at learning via an old WDRE/WLIR DiscJockey (Love to you, DJ Bird!) that Young American Recordings is reissuing my beloved "Something To Believe In" in an expanded two-disc version (Feb 21, 2006), PLUS a Live At The BBC recording (March 14, 2006) as well! Not only that, the band has been in the studio and are looking to release some brand new music soon!

As of this moment I've just ordered my new copy of "Something To Believe In" from Young American Recordings, and I simply cannot wait for its arrival so I can again share with you my love of scottish funk band APB on-air! I just wonder if the price gouging will continue once the new reissue is out.

PS - Look! They even did a gig with Soul legend James Brown!

Playlist Feb 11, 2006 (unValentine's Show) + Moving Units Interview

It's sort of become a tradition that I do a Valentine's show with a healthy dose of cynicism. In some ways this show was successful, and in some ways it failed. Then... there were all the requests I received for cheesy-upbeat singles that I honored. I suppose it became whatever it was, you know? My only hope (each time I do the show, in fact) is that those who listened in had fun doing so.

In other news:
Last night's Nine Inch Nails show was nothing short of phenomenal! I unfortunately missed Moving Units' opening set, because as always, flippin' Kansas City fails to mention if the time posted on the ticket is the door time or the show time, and Moving Units mustn't have played more than a 20 minute set. Sometimes there are things that this city truly needs to work on, I swear. "Disappointed" doesn't scratch the surface. I am way beyond upset.

Off to NIN/Moving Units, back next week

Unfortunately I won't be doing my show tomorrow night as I'll be going to see Nine Inch Nails and Moving Units at Kemper Arena. The fabulous Chuck of Chux Mix (Thurs. mornings 1am - 5am) will hold down the fort, though, so give him some love won'tcha? :)

Be sure to tune in next week, though as I'll be back to bring you more Retro-y goodness! I'm off to get some crackers to go with my cheese.
