The Depeche Mode show ended early due to (according to Depeche Mode's management) Dave having a bout of laryngitis. Supposedly he lost his voice after the six songs he performed. There were reports that he couldn't hear himself through his in-ear monitors during any of the songs he did, because he was supposedly seen telling the sound guy with hand gestures to turn him up. He kept it together up through the first six songs, getting the audience to sing a lot of the choruses, and when it came time for Martin Gore to sing "Home" and "It Doesn't Matter Two" (a regular break in the schedule). The music for "In Your Room" started which was supposed to bring Dave back on-stage, but when Dave failed to appear, the song was stopped and a sort of on-stage huddle happened. We learned that Dave was too ill to continue the show, and were asked by Andy Fletcher if we'd mind hearing a few more songs from Martin. The crowd cheered and chanted Martin's name. I shouted "Compulson" (geek that I am), which is a single from Martin's first solo effort. Martin announced they'd do one that was easy for them to do under the circumstances, and sang "Leave In Silence" (which hasn't been performed in the US in 20 years apparently). He proceeded on with "Somebody" (a signature song), "A Question of Lust" and "Damaged People" (off the new album). All the last four songs were not on the setlist for that night, and I'm not sure Damaged People was even one they were doing on this tour. I felt it was really brave of Martin and showed such showmanship to keep the show going for as long as he could without much rehearsal. He sounded so amazing as he sweated bullets up there. The worst bit was when Fletcher came back out to announce that the show was over. The look on the man's face as he did the tough part of saying something to a crowd of people that you just never want to have to say was heart breaking. He was visibly broken as his shoulders slumped over and his head went down as he exited the stage amidst a few boos from idiots who didn't know any better, and cheers and chants for more Martin from fans. I swear some people really must have been raised by wolves (re: those who booed).
I just hope that Depeche Mode don't wait another 12 years to come back to our fair city.

Playlist May 6, 2006 (Depeche Mode Special)
I cannot tell you how much I adore this band! I have never done as extensive a tribute to my other favorite band, Duran Duran. Perhaps someday, huh? I think you may all be burnt out on Depeche after this, so I will probably give it a rest for a few weeks. I did something I don't often do in announcing all the album titles that the Depeche Mode songs were from, so I'm typing them up on the playlist as well. Unfortunately, in doing all that talking, I didn't fit nearly as much music in as I would have liked.

This Tuesday Night @ Record Bar!
Also, this week's issue of The Pitch has a little blurb in the Night & Day section for Tuesday night! I gave 'em a photo too.
Here's the text:
Rocking On, Sunshine
By Rebecca Braverman
Music critics may use older bands Joy Division, Gang of Four, Echo & the Bunnymen to describe newer ones (particularly those that rip off the music of the early 80s), but what good does it do for listeners who have never heard the originals? Forever Young had a life before Youth Group and The O.C. but does anyone remember Alphaville?
Sunshine does. The host of Retro Red-Eye Express on KKFI 90.1 spins a mix of bands such as Devo and Bauhaus on Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. while blending in new tunes from up-and-comers like the Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientists. Tonight she moves the music to the Record Bar (1020 Westport Road, 816-753-5207), where shell take the decks around 10 p.m. Old-school new-wave types: Sunshine encourages you to bust out your vintage gear. Tue., April 18, 10 p.m. Record Bar, 1020 Westport Rd. , Kansas City

Thank You & Some Music News
First of all, many thanks to all who contributed during Retro Red-Eye Express last week and all throughout the week during our other programs. R2E2 managed to raise a respectable $220 last week. Your contributions help KKFI's independent voice continue to be heard! Let's try to up the ante tonight, shall we? I'm not entirely sure that my playlist for last week is complete, but I was kind of preoccupied, so I hope you will forgive me. Whatever I have will be posted a little bit later.
In Music News (Some of which is stolen borrowed from RememberTheEighties.com.):
Two members of Editors did an acoustic session during the "Rolling Stone Original" show during SXSW festival in Austin, TX recently. Here's a link to the over 15 minute peformance. It's in a format that only RealPlayer will read, so you will need to open RealPlayer and copy/paste the link address into the "Open Location" blank. It's definitely worth a listen. I think it's quite lovely.
Thomas Dolby is performing 20 dates in the US starting next week and going through May. Apparently he has a new album in the works as well and is warming himself up for something bigger. What has he been doing all this time? Apparently he founded a company called Beatnik that specializes in cell-phone ringtone software.
Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love frontman Richard Butler's first solo album is due out on April 18th (in the US), and he plays the last night of his US promotion tour tonight in Solana Beach, CA. (I can't tell you how much I wished he'd have visited us here in KC, but perhaps there's hope he'll add us to the upcoming Psych Furs tour rumored to take place this Summer.)
For those who haven't heard yet (I'm sure there's someone who hasn't yet), Bauhaus are playing US tour dates in support of Nine Inch Nails.
Duran Duran has been working on a new album and the latest I've heard is that they hope the first single will see a pre-Summer 2006 release. (One can only hope. Those guys are notorious perfectionists.)
I'm all kinds of excited for the May 10 Depeche Mode/She Wants Revenge show at Starlight in KC, MO! You're all going too, right?
Erasure are set to do an acoustic tour of the US and Europe, and have a new album due out on April 18th called Union St. It's comprised of reworkings of tracks from their back-catalogue, and they've released a new single called "Boy."
When In Rome, best known for their hit single "The Promise" (revisited recently on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack) have scheduled some US tour dates. Most notably is a gig on May 5th in Chicago, IL. Further info is forthcoming and should be available on their official myspace page.

APB News! "Something To Believe In" for Sure!
Last week I was ranting and raving again about how my APB "Something To Believe In" CD (which was "printed" in 1985) has been worse for wear these past couple of years. It had scuffs on it that, at first, started to make the sound of the first four tracks fuzzy, then eliminated them altogether. I had it buffed at a music store, but all it did was bring back the first two tracks (Shoot You Down and Talk To Me) in their fuzzy state.
As it is one of my most prized possessions, I have been all torn up about it, and those who were listening when I first bemoaned its demise a year ago heard me talk about how in looking to replace it, I found it was going for upwards of $100! Who buys a CD for $100?! Needless to say, I was gutted! If you look for it now, you'll find that a "slightly scuffed" copy goes for nearly $100, and a "new" one goes for nearly $250! Outrageous!
So, imagine my delight at learning via an old WDRE/WLIR DiscJockey (Love to you, DJ Bird!) that Young American Recordings is reissuing my beloved "Something To Believe In" in an expanded two-disc version (Feb 21, 2006), PLUS a Live At The BBC recording (March 14, 2006) as well! Not only that, the band has been in the studio and are looking to release some brand new music soon!
As of this moment I've just ordered my new copy of "Something To Believe In" from Young American Recordings, and I simply cannot wait for its arrival so I can again share with you my love of scottish funk band APB on-air! I just wonder if the price gouging will continue once the new reissue is out.

Playlist Feb 11, 2006 (unValentine's Show) + Moving Units Interview
It's sort of become a tradition that I do a Valentine's show with a healthy dose of cynicism. In some ways this show was successful, and in some ways it failed. Then... there were all the requests I received for cheesy-upbeat singles that I honored. I suppose it became whatever it was, you know? My only hope (each time I do the show, in fact) is that those who listened in had fun doing so.
In other news:
Last night's Nine Inch Nails show was nothing short of phenomenal! I unfortunately missed Moving Units' opening set, because as always, flippin' Kansas City fails to mention if the time posted on the ticket is the door time or the show time, and Moving Units mustn't have played more than a 20 minute set. Sometimes there are things that this city truly needs to work on, I swear. "Disappointed" doesn't scratch the surface. I am way beyond upset.

Off to NIN/Moving Units, back next week
Unfortunately I won't be doing my show tomorrow night as I'll be going to see Nine Inch Nails and Moving Units at Kemper Arena. The fabulous Chuck of Chux Mix (Thurs. mornings 1am - 5am) will hold down the fort, though, so give him some love won'tcha? :)
Be sure to tune in next week, though as I'll be back to bring you more Retro-y goodness! I'm off to get some crackers to go with my cheese.

New Music Recs for 1/21/06
Lately, I've been scouring MySpace for new music and have come up with some gems. The best thing about MySpace is that you can sample some of each band's music and decide very quickly whether or not they're any good. So, I want to share with you what I've come across:
The Flies
Talk about beautiful music... These guys are out of Bristol, England and have worked with acts like Tricky, Goldfrapp, and Portishead, among others.
Veldt
Out of Brighton, England (down on the southern coast), this band have lots of ethereal beauty to at least two of their dreamy songs. They sound like they draw influence from bands as disparate as A-Ha, Robyn Hitchcock, The Eurythmics and The Beatles. These guys actually just found me. Give 'em a listen.
We Are Scientists
These guys are creating a crazy buzz all over. All I know is that they're from the US, as their profile isn't specific. Their album was just released a week ago Tuesday, and their single "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt" has gotten plenty of airplay on 96.5 The Buzz. They're actually american, but have done lots of touring in the UK already. Their sound is choc-a-block with retro-y goodness. Think Moving Units, Gang of Four, etc.
Cut Copy
Okay, I didn't find out about this Australian electronic band via MySpace, but they are absolutely worth a mention. I saw them live when they opened for Franz Ferdinand, and they are just amazing.
Stimulator
Another band I didn't find out about from MySpace. This California based band opened for Duran Duran during part of their US tour, and I got to see them open for them when they played Kansas City. They are retro-y and put on a great show.
Astronaut
An NY based band. Great stuff! I don't know what else to say about them. Also didn't find them on MySpace.
Femme Fatality
Based in Missouri (St. Charles, I think), these guys are good to check out.
Vedera
Vedera (formerly Veda) are amazing! They're local Kansas City talent that is already going places! It's sad they had to change their band name because of some losers from California called "Veada"...that's all I'm gonna say on that. I digress, this band is one of the best things to come out of Kansas City in a while. Kristin has a beautiful voice and their instrumentation is nothing short of spectacular. If you are into Cocteau Twins, Bjork, or other bands fronted by beautiful, strong female voices, you have to check out Vedera.
The Tender Box
This CA based retro-alt-rock band isn't even signed yet, though they're getting airplay on California's Indie 103.1 FM and KROQ stations, not to mention their full tour schedule. Look out for them!
Clear Static
California based (are we seeing a patern forming here?) Clear Static are good, somewhat clean fun. They have a single out called Make-Up Sex which shows promise. These guys also opened for Duran Duran for part of their US tour this past Summer.
Orson
London, England based, pop-retro-rock, great stuff! Also supported Duran Duran at their recent UK shows. I swear I'm not biased! Ha!
Suit of Lights
Dreamy... good stuff out of Totowa, NJ.
The God Project
Industrial/Goth Rock out of the dark, brooding, college-town depths of Lawrence, KS.
Chew on that for a while. There's quite a lot more to be discovered, but I will continue this later. This entry barely scratches the surface.

I had actually found three versions of Winter Wonderland, and although I wanted to play them all, I managed to contain myself by only playing two. Playlist Oct. 29, 2005 (Halloween)
I was certain I would get more requests than I did, but I should have known people would most likely be out and about the weekend of Halloween. Someone even sent me suggestions via email while I was on-air. It's too bad I can't check email once I'm in the studio. Overall, I wanted things to run smoother than they did, but it was not meant to be. I had fun anyway and I hope everyone enjoyed it. :D
Start thinking about New Wave/Alternative Winter holiday song requests, because that's my next project.

New Music Recommendations
Okay, I realize I haven't done this in a really long time, but I've been a tad busy. It happens sometimes. ;)
Hello Goodbye - Heart Attack (RacingJunior Records)
A band comprised of Swedes and Norwegians, Hello Goodbye gives me hope for new music yet. They kind of remind me of a new indie-rock Bow Wow Wow. I realize people don't always like to draw comparisons, but sometimes you have to in order to sort of figure out why you like something so much.
Longwave - There's A Fire (LongwaveTheBand.com)
Mellow at times, but rockin' at others. I can hear a definite influence of New Wave music coupled with a bit of acoustic guitar and vocals reminiscent of Michael Penn meets Radiohead. Good stuff! Favorite tracks: There's A Fire, River (Depot Song)
Hurdy Gurdy - Prototyp (NoSide.com)
Bizarre instrumentals developed with the use of an old string instrument called a Hurdy Gurdy. Hurdy Gurdies were fabled in Germany to be used by dirty old men to lure children out so they could kidnap them or somesuch nonsense, it also was connected to folklore that suggested it was used to convince parents to sell their daughters into prostitution/slavery. There is some haunting sounding stuff that I hope to find a way to incorporate into the show somehow, if only a couple of times. This duo consists of two swedish Hurdy Gurdy masters: Brisland-Ferner of a band called Garmarna and Totte Mattsson of Hedningarna (two swedish bands, I presume, since I've heard of neither). All this time I wondered what Donvan was singing about in "Hurdy Gurdy Man."
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary (SubPop Records)
Canadian band Wolf Parade have given me hope with this latest release. I hear piano, acoustic guitar and vocals that bring have a sort of Hot Hot Heat and Gary Numan soul. I definitely hear some Bowie influence as well. Nice. I like the following: Grounds For Divorce, Dear Sons & Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
Music NOT recommended:
I hate to bash people's bands and stuff, but sometimes you get something that you just expected so much more out of. I'm sorry, but I was disappointed in the following CDs that I received recently.
The Birthday Massacre --- bad 80s influenced band. They've taken an 80s sound and tried to make it into pop-punk, but not in a good way. What's worse is their image tries so hard to be a dark, ragdoll version of new wave. I think that's what they thought their sound would be like. They failed. If someone tries to recommend them to you, please reconsider checking them out.
Ghost In The Machine --- Likewise, except more like taking bad arena rock and marrying it to wannabe Trent Reznor stylings.
If you're going to create a band that's influenced by an era that I many people hold so dear, at least please have some respect. Sheesh.
More later...

Playlist August 6, 2005 (Interview Nick Rhodes)
Tonight I broadcast an interview I recorded with Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran on Thursday afternoon, July 21, 2005, just before they played the Midland Theatre here in KC (July 23rd). As I've said in a previous post, it will be re-broadcast Wed. night/Thursday morning (Aug. 11th) on Chux Mix, which airs from 1am to 5am.
I have to admit that leading up to the interview with the classic Duran Duran song "Careless Memories" finally made me realize how real the interview had been, and what it meant to me to get the opportunity to do it. It's indescribable, that feeling. :)
I hope it made for interesting listening, and I hope you got some laughs from it as well. I know I did. :D Unfortunately, (sort of), I got lots of calls afterwards, and had a hard time keeping the show sounding smooth (at least from my standpoint). I also may have missed writing down some of the songs I played, but I'm typing up what I have on paper. Also, I broke some of my rules this weekend... but I'm sure you can relate. R2E2's 3rd Birthday
July 19, 2002 was the first night that Retro Red-Eye Express aired on KKFI. So, tune in this weekend (July 16th) when I celebrate the show's 3rd Birthday! Can you believe it's been three years? Where did the time go?
If anyone wants to do something special, please email me (retroredeye@gmail.com) in advance. I really don't like surprises late on a Saturday night. Believe me, it's been done. Unless you ask me in advance, please don't just turn up during the show.
FYI, I won't be doing the show on Saturday, July 23rd due to a special concert I'm attending (you know the one). Curt, host of "The Rocker" on Tuesday nights, will guest host to bring you his version of Retro Red-Eye Express.

Today was a monumental day as it was Live8 day... when several countries held free concerts to raise awareness about the G8 convention and to show how many people supported Bob Geldof (of The Boomtown Rats) and Bono (of U2)'s message. It's been 20 years since Live Aid's efforts in 1985, and not much has changed since then. This was such a massive movement and many of the bands who played Live Aid also signed on to be part of Live8 as well. Find out more at the following websites: www.live8live.com and www.one.org.
